The need for effective and targeted knowledge management in the public sector is growing in response to complex challenges, impending retirement waves, and digital transformation. However, knowledge management is often treated as a buzzword, without really understan-ding its scope.

In this paper, we position generalised trust as central to the debate on elites’ assessments of trust in EU multi-level governance. We leverage one of the most influential factors in explaining political trust in single-government studies to understand variations in trust towards political authorities at various levels.

Methylmercury contamination in Mediterranean seafood: Exposure assessment and cost of illness implications

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a widespread contaminant that bioaccumulates in marine food webs, including those in the Mediterranean sea. It poses serious health risks, especially to developing infants and children, where exposure can cause neurological damage and developmental delays.

Development and Implementation of a Youth-Check for Berlin

The project engages with the development and introduction of a youth specific regulatory impact assessment tool (‘youth-check’) for the Federal State of Berlin. The project was introduced after the Berlin Senate passed a resolution in April of 2024 which approved the introduction and implementation of a youth-check for Berlin. The youth-check is a regulatory impact assessment tool that helps to raise awareness for the concerns of the young generation. The youth-check helps to visualise the effects of draft legislation on the young generation.

    Building Bridges: The partnership with EURAC Bozen takes a new step. International conference on artificial intelligence in cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation

    On 28 February 2025, the Institute for Comparative Federalism at EURAC Bozen organised, in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, an international conference on "Artificial Intelligence - Challenges for Administration and Law". EURAC Bozen is a research institution with which FÖV signed a cooperation agreement in 2010. The conference represents a new step of a lively scientific exchange between the two institutions.

    “Satisfied with New Work? The effects of changes in work on the health and satisfaction of employees”

    The third workshop in the “New Work in Public Administration” series of events will take place from April 2 to 3. As in previous years, the event will be organized by the National Intsitute for Public Administration (NIPAG) and held in cooperation with the subcommittee “General Administrative Organization” (UA AV) of AK VI of the Conference of Interior Ministers under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jan Ziekow and Dr. Silke I.     Discussion Paper „What does knowledge management in public administrations look like in practice? Development of KM criteria on the basis of case study reviews" is published

    The recently published discussion paper “What does knowledge management in public administrations look like in practice? Development of KM criteria on the basis of case study reviews.” analyses and clarifies the sometimes elusive concept of knowledge management using a series of international case studies. The author Stella Hill examines over 100 instances where knowledge management has been implemented in the public sector, deriving a set of criteria that empirically define knowledge management.

    The handbook "The Civil Service in Europe: A Research Companion" has been published

    Over 50 experts from various European countries analyse the changes and reform needs of the civil service in Europe comparatively in about thousand pages. The handbook aims to establish civil service law as part of European constitutional and administrative law and promote a European public administration perspective.

    Lecture hosted at the NIPAG on the international research project 'Opportunities and risks associated with automated administrative decisions,' with the participation of the NIPAG.

    On 3 December 2024, guest researcher Prof. Angela Ferrari Zumbini (Universita Federico II, Naples, Italy) gave a lecture at the National Institute for Public Administration Germany (NIPAG) on the application of artificial intelligence in administrative decision-making.
