Retrospective: POLICY MAKING FOR ALL - How governments can integrate young people’s perspectives in decision making
International digital fishbowl discussion hosted by the Youth Check Centre of Excellence
Description and content of the event
The question of how the perspective of young people can be integrated into policy-making processes was addressed on 5 December 2023 by the digital discussion event hosted by the Youth Check Centre of Excellence (KomJC), entitled 'Policy Making for all: How governments can integrate young people’s perspectives in decision making'.
Following a welcome address by Rebecca Romes, the General Manager of the Youth Check Centre of Excellence, Moritz Ader, a policy analyst at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), presented a keynote speech on the OECD's findings regarding the situation of young people and the most effective practices for integrating their perspectives into policy-making processes. Subsequently, the panel engaged in a discussion with Biliana Sirakova (EU Youth Coordinator at the European Commission) and Katrīna Leitāne (Chair of the Youth Committee of the European Economic and Social Committee) regarding the ways in which policy-makers can more effectively consider the interests of young people. A variety of measures were discussed, including the implementation of youth strategies, the incorporation of youth-specific legislative impact assessments, such as the Youth Check, and the facilitation of opportunities for young people to be consulted. The international audience of experts, moderated by Janis Fifka, engaged in a discussion on the digital podium.
