Youth-Check Thuringia to continue until 2026

The Thuringian Cabinet has decided to continue the youth-check Thuringia until what is expected to be 2026. This means that the youth-check Thuringia project bureau can continue its work beyond 2024 and continue to contribute to youth-friendly legislation in Thuringia.
The Thuringian Cabinet meeting on 6 August 2024 voted in favour of an extension to the youth-check Thuringia project. This means that the youth-check Thuringia project bureau (ProJCT) will be able to continue its work in cooperation with the Youth Participation Support Centre of the Thuringia State Ministry for Education, Youth and Sports (TMBJS) until at least 2026. The extension is still subject to budgetary approval. The ProJCT project sponsor is the National Institute for Public Administration Germany (NIPAG), which is also home to the Competence Centre Youth-Check, which implements the youth-check at the federal level.
'The youth-check Thuringia has all the hallmarks of a successful project'
Prof. Dr Jan Ziekow, Director of the NIPAG, emphasised: 'We are delighted to be able to continue beyond 2024 with the evaluation of the impact that legislation has on young people in Thuringia and to build on the successful foundation that has already been laid.'
The Thuringia State Minister for Youth, Helmut Holter, made it clear that he is committed to the continuation of the youth-check Thuringia project: 'The youth-check Thuringia project is a successful project that focuses on the concerns of young people. We want to continue with the project and establish it as a permanent feature in the work of the government'.
First state with its own youth-check
After the Federal Government, Thuringia was the first Federal State to set up an evaluation of the consequences of legislation on young people. Youth-check Thuringia was launched as a model project in February 2022. During the consultation phase, ProJCT assessed all draft laws submitted by the Thuringia state government for their potential impact on young people in Thuringia. A total of nine bills were published with a youth-check, which corresponds to around one third of the bills examined. In 2023, the 'Youth Team' was also tested as a participatory format for involving young people in the youth-check. ProJCT was responsible for the expert evaluation of draft legislation and the communication of the contents in a form suitable for young people during the events.
