On 28 February 2025, the Institute for Comparative Federalism at EURAC Bozen organised, in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, an international conference on "Artificial Intelligence - Challenges for Administration and Law". At this event, scholars and civil servants from Italy and Germany exchanged their experiences in dealing with AI. Professor Cristina Fraenkel-Haeberle, Senior Researcher at FÖV Speyer, explained the status of algorithmization in German public administration and particularly emphasized the challenges associated with the implementation of the AI Regulation.

The conference represents a new step of a lively scientific exchange between both institutions, which led 2010 to the signing of a cooperation agreement that includes, among other things, guest researcher stays and joint publications. Last year, the international research project "Digitalimpact", commissioned by the South Tyrolean provincial administration and carried out in cooperation with the University of Innsbruck with FÖV participation, was successfully completed. Within the framework of the project, the status of digitalization and its effects on the distribution of competences in states with a federal or regional structure were examined, using the examples of Estonia, Germany, Austria, Italy, as well as the federal state of Tyrol and the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Trento. The scientific outcome of the research project will be published this year by Nomos.

EURAC Research is nowadays a significant player in international applied research, employing over 600 researchers from nearly 50 nations. Continuing this scientific dialogue also for the future could generate substantial added value for all involved.
