Retrospective: NGI Forward Salon Digital Sovereignty in eID-Solutions

Description and content of the event

Two webinars were held under the title ‘Digital Sovereignty in eID Solutions’ as part of the EU Commission's ‘NGI Forward’ initiative. The two discussion rounds focussed on a much-discussed scientific and digital policy topic: digital identities. They are the central building block on the way to a digital Europe and the linchpin for digital communication between administration and citizens. Germany is discussing how the ID card can be transferred to smartphones and what role the new OZG user account will play - and an architecture for decentralised, interoperable eID solutions is being developed at EU level. The EU Commission has announced a reform proposal for the eIDAS Regulation for summer 2021. Many stakeholders are throwing their interests into the ring.

During the webinars, representatives from the worlds of science, administration and business discussed the issue. The discussions centred on the German and European perspective on the questions of
- what is at stake in the area of eID,
- what technical solutions are available,
- which legal frameworks are in place and will be needed in the future.
