Research Group "Governance of Research"
RESEARCH PROCESS
The research group was founded in May 2001 within the context of an international research conference at the German Research Institute of Public Administration (FÖV) Speyer on "International Competitiveness and Innovative Capacity in Universities and Research Organizations - New Modes of Governance". During the Discussion at this conference it turned out that so far no solutions existed for the problem of how to design universities and research institutions in ways that promote innovation. The demand for further interdisciplinary research in this field led to the establisment of a research network. This research network was to examine the question of how to conceptualise an adequate framework for innovative resarch.
In July 2003 the German Research Foundation (DFG) approved the request for the set-up of a research group. In October 2003 the group started its research with intially seven and later eight participating projects. Initiator of the research group was Prof. Dr. Dorothea Jansen (FÖV Speyer). Ms. Jansen is also speaker of the research group.
In May 2006 the work of the research group was evaluated positively by a DFG-Commission. The same year in July the continuation of funding was approved for a further period of three years (2006-2009). Part of the second funding period are now alltogether nine projects of which one project (P5) runs as an associated project.
The ending of the first funding period was marked by a conference on research policy on March 14-15, 2007 at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. Under the heading "New Governance for Research" the research group presented its latest findings to the public and officially published its Research Policy Recommendations. More information on the conference and related documents can be found here.
The research results are to find their way into practice via the German Research Institute for Public Administration (FÖV) and the Centre for Science & Research Management (ZWM) as the institute's strategic partner.
