The Contribution of Supranational and International Organisations to the Fight Against Corruption in the Member States. Progress and Obstacles

Welcome to the research project

"The Contribution of Supranational and International Organisations to the Fight Against Corruption in the Member States. Progress and Obstacles"

Fighting corruption at national level is a rather new task dealt with by international and supranational organisations. It is only since the mid 90ies that binding international instruments are developed. The UN Convention against Corruption which entered into force 14 December 2005 is the most ambitious anti-corruption instrument so far. At the moment, governments around the world are ratifying and implementing various international anti-corruption rules. Their performance is evaluated by different international monitoring institutions.

The research project's aim is threefold:

(1) It seeks to explore why and under which circumstances international organisations decide(d) to tackle corruption at national level.

(2) It aspires to describe and analyze the various international anti-corruption measures.

(3) It intends to examine if and how international anti-corruption rules are implemented at national level.

The project only deals with international and supranational organisations which have developed binding anti-corruption instruments with regard to Germany: EU, OECD, Council of Europe, and UN. It combines approaches of both law and political science.

The research project is financed by and carried out at the German Research Institute for Public Administration.
